Conditions were not ideal to say the least for the first game of the 2019 season as St. Lawrence's Junior Team took on Wolfe Tones of Liverpool in the Wolfe Tone Cup.

The weather and pitch combined with general ring-rust lead to a very scrappy first 8 mins of the game with both teams being very wasteful with the ball.

Both teams deployed a sweeper to start and played 13 a side (Wolfe Tones travelled with 14) while st Lawrence's had 23 at their disposal.

The first score was a scrappy goal after the Wolfe Tones keeper made a good save from Nash but he was unable to stop the returning Michael Flannery finding the net on 9 mins.

This was followed up by 2 Dermot Thornton points plus a great point from new signing from Nemo Rangers Ross Donovan and a Conor Boylan scores to leave it 1.4 to 0.0 after 18 mins.

St Lawernce's continued to press with Flannery and Thornton adding to their tally after a great work by our half back line. Donovan was making his presence felt in midfield and was rewarded with another score on 25 mins.

Wolfe Tones didn't let the heads drop and scored 2 quick scores by their number 12. To take it 2 half time. 1-9 to 0-2.

As expected this early in the season the 2nd half began as slow as the first with no score being registered until 38 mins by Wolfe Tones.

St. Lawrence's replied in kind with a Thornton point, a Conway goal and another Thornton point half way through the 2nd half.

Tones responded with a point of their own by number 12 who had a solid game.

Brain O'Connor joined the fray in the second half and contributed a point before a Wolfe Tones goal by number 7 who was on his toes to collect a rebound from a long range shot to bury home.

Dan Turley got his 1st score on 52 mins while Wolfe Tones got another goal on 46 mins from number 11. The final score of the day went to Stevie Durham also on from the bench to get a short run out.

This was a good start from the Turn Moss men, the first half spell in particular will give Mellett, Kearnery and Co. reasons to be happy with but as can be expected there was a lot of rust on both sides.

Wolfe Tones for their part stuck at with 14 men and I'm sure they will be a different prospect when the teams meet again in the Junior League. Best for them was the goalkeeper who made several super saves early on as well as their Numbers 11 and 12.

Final Score: 2.13 to 2.4
